Under a clear sky, thousands of Canadians, many who were dressed in red and white, headed to LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa to celebrate Canada Day.

Claudette Commanda, an Algonquin elder, began the event by providing Indigenous insights. With a small wooden canoe on stage, Commanda spoke of its significance to Indigenous peoples. Using the canoe as a symbol of healing and hope, she stated that both Canadian and Indigenous children will travel together.

“Learn from the past, appreciate the present, and honor the future, because the future belongs to the children. Let us travel together in peace and friendship,” she declared.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge also addressed the gathering. Freeland was met with loud cheers when she stated that it was time to put aside “our national modesty” and exclaim that Canada is the world’s best country.

“The most important thing is that ours is a country of good and kind people,” she declared.

Freeland was there instead of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who sent greetings through a pre-recorded video as he took part in a ceremony in St. John’s, N.L.

The Prime Minister participated in the centennial commemoration ceremony of the Newfoundland National War Memorial and the burial of the remains of a World War I soldier as Memorial Day was held in the province.

On the other side of the border, at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, the distinct smell of maple syrup wafted down Pennsylvania Avenue on Monday morning, in the vicinity of the U.S. Capitol, as families wearing red and white clothing got together to celebrate their national holiday while residing abroad.

“Today we celebrate Canada. It is about honoring our people, our values,” declared Kirsten Hillman, Canadian Ambassador to the United States.
